“…A lthough AIDS-defining cancers have declined following the introduction of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) still comprise more than 50% of all AIDS-defining cancers (1) and are the most frequent cause of death in these patients (2). Most HIV-1-related NHLs (HIV-NHLs) are high-grade B-cell lymphomas such as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and Burkitt lymphoma (BL).…”

“…9,10 This is largely because HIV increases the risk of some cancers, the prevalence of HIV increases with improved life expectancy, and the population of people living with HIV is aging. The cancers most closely linked to HIV 11,12 comprise approximately two thirds of cancers in this population.…”

“…Among PLWH, smoking is associated with poor health (Freiberg et al, 2010; Madeddu et al, 2013; Vandenhende et al, 2015), poor adherence to and decreased effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy, and poor HIV treatment outcomes (Feldman et al, 2006; O’Cleirigh et al, 2015; Shuter & Bernstein, 2008). Smokers with HIV lose more life years to smoking than to HIV (Helleberg et al, 2013).…”
