Cancer mortality predictions for 2019 in Latin America

Abstract: We estimated mortality figures for 2019 in seven Latin American countries, with focus on breast cancer. We retrieved cancer death certification and population data from the WHO and PAHO databases. We obtained mortality statistics for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico and Venezuela for 1970-2015. We predicted current death numbers and agestandardised (world population) mortality rates using joinpoint regression models. Total cancer mortality is predicted to decline in all countries and both sexes… Show more

“…In total, 62,100 new urinary bladder cancer cases and 13,050 deaths are estimated to the United States in 2020 (Siegel et al ., 2020). Between 1990 and 2019, no decline was observed at urinary bladder cancer mortality rates in Brazil and Cuba (Carioli et al ., 2019). Usually deaths caused by this type of tumor occur in less developed countries, due to a lack of structure to assist the patients in detection (Siegel et al ., 2017).…”

“…Regarding mortality, its distribution varied widely between regions, being the Eastern region the one that had lower ASR than national for all types of cancer. According to previous studies, disparities in mortality can be explained by diagnosis in advanced stages, limited access to quality health services and treatment opportunity (16)(17)(18). However, in our study population, there were no differences between the proportion of people diagnosed with invasive neoplasms or the rst treatment initiation.…”
