“…Given the higher incidence of lung cancer in these patients, it is important to take a diagnostic approach in order to effectively differentiate malignant pneumoconiosis lesions from benign ones. (19) In the present study, chest HRCTs revealed that the large opacities were predominantly (in 88.6% of the cases) located in the upper and posterior thirds of the lung.Air bronchograms and calcifications within the masses were found in over half of the patients. Calcified hilar and mediastinal lymph nodes were observed in 81% of the cases, 25% being of the eggshell type.…”

“…to better paid jobs (in comparison with traditional subsistence farming activities); however, at the same time there were questions about the sustainability of work: there were countless work accidents and work-related lung disease (pneumoconiose) linked to dust inhalation (Mendes, 1979;Carneiro et al, 2002;Castro et al, 2005). As a consequence, a package of new regulations was ushered in from 1978 onwards.…”

“…Cases of lung cancer associated with exposure to asbestos and silica have been reported in the Brazilian literature. (25,26) Due to the multifactorial character of cancer, it is complicated to estimate the disease burden attributable to risk factors. Although the contribution of occupational exposure is small, in comparison with that of smoking, it is much superior to that of other risks associated with lung cancer.…”
