Neutrophile-Lymphocyte (NLR) and Platelet-Lymphocyte ratio (PLR) comparison is an easy to use and cost-effective method in diagnosis of some cancers and diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate if NLR/PLR ratio evaluation could be utilized in diagnosis of testicular malignencies especially in early-term with occult metastasis. Materials and methods: A total of 40 patients at stage-I, who have undergone radical inguinal orchiectomy intervention for testicular tumor between 2015 and 2019, and 43 control individuals without any testicular complaints were included in this retrospective study. The relationship between pathological risk factors for occult metastatic disease in Stage-I testicular cancer and NLR/PLR values were investigated. Results: The average age was 30.05 years, and there was no significant difference between the groups by means of age (p=0.150). The NLR and PLR values of the tumor group were prominently higher in the patient group, when compared with the control group (p=0.001 and p=0.016, respectively). In the correlation analysis between risk-factors for occult metastatic disease in Stage-I testicular cancer and NLR/PLR, we have found that only a significant correlation was present in terms of tumor size. Conclusion:As a result, we have concluded that NLR increases in all types of testicular tumors. We suggest that higher NLR ratio values can be used as prognostic marker in clinical practice.

In the current study, we aimed to investigate whether expression of immune checkpoint proteins (V-domain Ig suppressor of T cell activation (VISTA) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1)) and markers of systemic inflammation could predict progression/relapse and death in the cohort of 180 patients with testicular germ-cell tumors (GCTs). Expression of PD-L1 and VISTA was assessed by immunohistochemistry utilizing tissue microarrays. To estimate systemic inflammation neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were calculated. We found high PD-L1 and VISTA expression on tumor-associated immune cells (TAICs) in 89 (49.44%) and 63 (37.22%) of GCTs, respectively, whereas tumor cells besides trophoblastic elements were almost uniformly negative. High PD-L1 was associated with seminomatous histology and lower stage. Relapses in stage I patients occurred predominantly in cases with low numbers of PD-L1 and VISTA-expressing TAICs. In stage II/III disease, the combination of low VISTA-expressing TAICs and high PLR was identified as predictor of shorter event-free survival (HR 4.10; 1.48–11.36, p = 0.006) and overall survival (HR 15.56, 95% CI 1.78–135.51, p = 0.001) independently of tumor histology and location of metastases. We demonstrated that the assessment of immune checkpoint proteins on TAICs may serve as a valuable prognostic factor in patients with high-risk testicular GCTs. Further study is warranted to explore the predictive utility of these biomarkers in GCTs.

Background: In the diagnosis of prostatic diseases, the need for markers other than prostate specific antigen (PSA) has been increasing in recent years. So, we aimed to determine the predictive value, the neutrophil lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and mean platelet volume before prostate biopsy in predicting the results of pathology. Transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy of the prostate was performed because of high PSA values and compared values of these parameters to predict of pathology results. Methods: 2715 patients who underwent 10-12 quadrant transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsies between January 2008 and January 2018 have been evaluated retrospectively. Patients were divided into groups according to the biopsy pathology results by benign (group 1), atypical small acinar proliferation (ASAP) (group 2) and prostate cancer (group 3). A total of 204 patients who were benign prostate hyperplasia in 71 patients (34.8%), atypical small acinar proliferation in 80 (39.21%) and prostate adenocarcinoma (PCa) in 53 patients (25.98%) were included in the study by systematic sampling. Before the biopsy total PSA (tPSA), free PSA (fPSA), rate of percentage of free to total prostate specific antigen (f/tPSA) rate, PSA density (PSA-D), white blood cell (WBC) count, blood neutrophil count (NC), blood lymphocyte count (LC), neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet count (PLT) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were measured and compared in all groups. Differences in continuous variables were assessed using the ANOVA. Logistic regression was used to analyze the linear relationship between predictive variables and pathology results. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: NLR and PLR values were lower in group 1 than group 2 and were found statistically significant between in group 1 and group 2 (p: 0.03 and p: 0.02, respectively).
