Abstract: The vagus nerve (VN) is the longest cranial nerve innervating the neck, thorax and abdomen, with afferent fibres transmitting a range of interoceptive stimuli and efferent fibres to somatic structures and autonomic preganglions. Over the last few decades, electrical stimulation of the VN using implanted devices (VNS) has been developed leading to its approval for the treatment of epilepsy and depression. More recently non-invasive devices to stimulation the VN have been developed. The VN has many functions and… Show more

“…Our manipulation check for tVNS stimulation, heart rate changes, did not return significant effects (see supplementary material). More reliable indicators for vagal activity could be heart rate variability 56 or measure of pupil dilation 57 and/or analgesic effect of tVNS 58 . Further human investigations with a valid manipulation check are indispensable to draw conclusions about tVNS effects on fear extinction.…”

“…Inclusion of artisanal fermented vegetables like sauerkraut and kimchee may improve the gut microbiome and stimulate the vagal afferents to the brain. It has been suggested that stimulating the vagus nerve may help to improve seizure control [76]. Since a number of chemicals used in food production and processing have been shown to be mitochondrial inhibitors and have widespread negative effects on cellular metabolism [77], fresh, local, organically grown produce is preferred.…”

“…In such studies, one of the frequently used variable has been heart rate variability (HRV), a psycho-physiological parameter which is robust marker of mortality and cardiovascular health. Several studies have clearly shown the salutary effects of meditation on HRV 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. However, Heartfulness practices and their effect on cardiovascular measures has not been studied yet.…”
