Calibration of one‐dimensional flow setup used for estimating fabric permeability using three different reference media

Abstract: Experimental estimation of the permeability of reinforcement fabrics is very important in conducting accurate mold‐filling simulations for liquid composite molding (LCM) processes employed to manufacture polymer matrix composites. In this study, the one‐dimensional (1D) flow based permeability measuring setup was calibrated for the first time using three different reference media: an aluminum block with drilled parallel holes, a lattice of 3D unit cells created using rapid prototyping, and carbon fabric used i… Show more

“…The CNF composites are manufactured using an improvised LCM process where the CNF aerogels are used as preform and the bio-based epoxy as the matrix. The improvised LCM process was essentially based on a conventional vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process where a vacuum up to 100 kPa was applied to pull the resin through the preform inside a mold Barari & Pillai, 2014). The experimental setup consists of a vacuum pump, a resin trap and a 'micro' LCM mold.…”

“…Another more recent (and scientifically more in step with the field of flow modeling in porous media) method to model wicking of liquids into porous media is based on using Darcy's law . In 1856, Henry Darcy reported his empirical formula for flow in a porous medium based on his investigation of the relationship between water, flow rate through a sand column and the pressure gradient through a hydraulic resistance term.…”
