Abstract: The proton and natural abundance carbon-13 NMR spectra of (±)-3-butyn-2-ol enriched in the S enantiomer (ee = 72%) and oriented in the chiral nematic liquid crystalline phase of [poly(γ-benzyl-l-glutamate)/deuterochloroform] have been obtained and analyzed. The residual 1H−H and 1H−13C dipolar couplings were corrected for the effects of molecular harmonic vibrational motions and used to determine the r α structure and the five independent order parameters, S αβ, for each enantiomer. It is shown that the data i… Show more

“…[41] We also showed that the degree of solute order can be varied by the concentration of the LC phase, while the preferred orientation of the solute remains unchanged. In accordance with results found in the literature, [35,37] we have also quantified the degree of enantiodifferentiation, showing that the difference in couplings and order tensors is only minute, but nevertheless can be determined reliably. [42] If enantiodifferentiation in homopolypetidic liquid crystals shall be modulated, two homopolypeptides can be mixed as was recently reported by Lesot et al [40] Herein, we describe further investigations into modulating the orienting properties of PBLG LC phases revealing that, on the one hand, the induced degree of solute orientation can be reduced even further, and on the other hand, the degree of enantiodifferentiation in terms of different orientations can be significantly increased by the use of additives, such as CCl 4 .…”

“…First, the selective refocusing experiments can be applied only if some proton NMR signals are isolated enough to be excited selectively. Second, even if the ability of the chiral polypeptides to discriminate enantiomers is very general, 20 it does not imply necessarily that spectral enantiodiscriminations will be observed through a specific proton-proton dipolar coupling. Chiral discrimination originates in a differential ordering effect of enantiomers inside the chiral oriented phase.…”

“…The first step was to adjust the positions of protons in the aromatic rings to minimize R for the intraring D i j . The spectral analysis produces D 19,23 ϭD 20,22 (ϭD 15,17 ), and so the distances r 19,23 , r 20,22 , and r 15,17 equivalently S zz R and S xx R ϪS yy R ), r 9,10 and r 11,21 to give the results shown in Table III. The ring geometries were then kept fixed in all subsequent calculations.…”
