Calcitonin gene-related peptide modulates interleukin-13 in circulating cutaneous lymphocyte-associated antigen-positive T cells in patients with atopic dermatitis

Abstract: Our results suggest an immunomodulatory role of CGRP towards a Th2 pattern in CLA+ T cells, which may contribute to exacerbating clinical symptoms in patients with AD.

“…Accordingly, this effect would lead to a decrease in inflammatory and pain mediators and therefore cannot explain the analgesic properties of CGRP receptor antagonist observed in our studies. Immune cells and neurons [2,43,74] express CGRP receptors. CGRP can be released by macrophages, and CGRP receptor antagonist can decrease the release of proinflammatory mediators from immune cells [47].…”

“…While it is unclear what role CGRP plays in allergic conditions the peptide is markedly upregulated in the airways of atopic asthmatics during late-phase reactions provoked by inhalation of allergen-derived T-cell activating peptides [108]. Furthermore, the response of immune cells appears to alter in human subjects with allergic disease and/or inflammation.…”

“…Finally, other neurogenic mechanisms involve CLA + T cells in AD. Calcitonin gene-related peptide has been shown to directly activate CLA + T cells and increase IL-13 production in AD patients, [39] and mental stress in AD increased the number of CLA + T cells in circulation [40]. …”
