Calcification of the Breast Following a Typhoid Abscess

Abstract: 1. In a patient with typhoid fever, who had taken, during eleven days, 132 grammes of lactate of calcium by the mouth, as well as 5 grammes of chloride of calcium subcutaneously, there developed, eleven days after the subcutaneous infusion, a large abscess of the breast from which Bacillus typhosus and Staphylococcus aureus were obtained on culture. “…Incidence of Salmonella breast abscess is 0.9% in typhoid infection 3. The first reported case of breast abscess was by Thayer and Hazen in 1907, in a young woman presenting with breast abscess 4. In our case, it was probably a case of focal infection with S. paratyphi, or it could be a case of chronic carrier, manifesting as a breast abscess.…”

“…In some cases, the patient's breast might have become infected during a transient bacteremic episode originating from the patient's bowel, and the immunosuppressive state of the patient might have facilitated formation of the abscess [5]. The first reported case of breast abscess was by Thayer and Hazen, who isolated Salmonella Typhi from the breast abscess of a young housemaid presenting to the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore in 1907 [7]. In a literature review, 16 cases of breast abscess due to Salmonella are reported, 75% due to Salmonella Typhi and 25%…”

“…Typhoid breast abscesses have been reported to develop in 0.9 % of the patients with generalized S. Typhi infections [ 1 , 7 ]. The first reported case of breast abscess was by Thayer and Hazen, who isolated S. Typhi from the breast abscess of a young housemaid presenting to the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore in 1907 [ 17 ]. Madelung had stated that until 1923 there were only 30 cases of Salmonella breast abscess case reports in the literature.…”
