Caffeine-Related Atrial Fibrillation

Abstract: We present a case of caffeine-induced atrial fibrillation which spontaneously reverted to normal sinus rhythm. Caffeine is a methylxanthine alkaloid that can cause various supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias. It is important to improve public awareness of the potential adverse effects of high consumption of caffeine-containing products as fatal and serious events can occur.

“…Most deaths after caffeine intoxication were caused by overdoses of diet pills and stimulants, and most have occurred in young patients without known underlying heart disease or any variant of normal, such as mitral valve prolapse. In one non-fatal adverse event report, no predisposing factors or structural cardiac abnormality were associated with atrial fibrillation (122). In this case, caffeine-induced atrial fibrillation spontaneously reverted to normal sinus rhythm.…”

“…Anecdotal evidence points to caffeine consumption as a trigger of AF22, 48, 49 but observational studies have had conflicting results. Results of observational studies exploring this association are summarized in Table 3.…”

“…The association between caffeine exposure and AF is currently unknown, although a positive association has been suggested in the literature 14 15. To further evaluate this putative association, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.…”
