The aim of this experimental study was to examine the eff ect of Caff eic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) on steroidinduced osteonecrosis of femoral head (ONFH) in rats. Thirty-one male Wistar albino rats were divided into 4 groups: control group (7 rats), methylprednisolone treatment group (MPS, 8 rats), CAPE treatment group (8 rats) and MPS+CAPE administered group (8 rats). The rats of group MPS and CAPE+MPS, On days 2, 3 and 4 were treated with 20 mg/kg/ day methylprednisolone (MPS; Pfizer Pharmaceutical, Puurs, Belgium) intramuscularly. 10 μmol/kg/day CAPE was intraperitoneally injected to the rats of group CAPE from 13 weeks of age for 4 weeks. The control group was fed and housed under identical conditions without any treatment. All rats were sacrifi ced at 17 weeks of age by taking blood from the heart. Both proximal femoral parts were taken for histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis . Total oxidant status, total antioxidant status, and oxidative stress index (OSI), lipid parameters, coagulation parameters were assessed in blood specimens. Much lesser amount of osteonecrosis lesions were observed in the MPS+CAPE group compared to MPS group. In immunhisochemical analysis, oxidative stress was found signifi cantly decreased in CAPE+MPS group compared to MPS group. OSI levels were signifi cantly decreased in CAPE+MPS group compared to MPS group (p<0.001). In CAPE+MPS group lipid and coagulation parameters were found positively aff ected compared to MPS group. In conclusion, CAPE has strong protective eff ect against the steroid induced femoral head osteonecrosis in rats.

Background: Chlorpyrifos (CPF), insecticide widely used in agriculture, may cause poisonings in the case of humans. As a result, there is a large amount of treatment research underway to focus on the possibility of chlorpyrifos induced poisonings. The aim of this study has been to evaluate the effects of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and intralipid (IL) on hepatotoxicity induced by chlorpyrifos in the case of rats. Material and Methods: The rats in this study were treated with CPF (10 mg/kg body weight (b.w.), orally), CAPE (10 µmol/kg b.w., intraperitoneally), IL (18.6 ml/kg b.w., orally), CPF+CAPE, CPF+IL, and CPF+CAPE+IL. The plasma total oxidant capacity (TOC), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were measured and the oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated. Liver histopathology and immunohistochemical staining were performed. Results: Chlorpyrifos statistically significantly decreased the TAC levels in the rats' plasma and increased the apoptosis and the TOC and OSI levels. In the chlorpyrifos induced liver injury, CAPE and CAPE+IL significantly decreased the plasma OSI levels and the apoptosis, and significantly increased the plasma TAC levels. Conclusions: This study revealed that CAPE and CAPE+IL attenuate chlorpyrifos induced liver injuries by decreasing oxidative stress and apoptosis. Med Pr 2016;67(6):743-749
