Cable force estimation of a long‐span cable‐stayed bridge with microwave interferometric radar

Abstract: Since cables are the critical structural components for ensuring the overall structural integrity and safety of cable-stayed bridges, the portable and rapid cable force measurement has a very important practical significance in the bridge health monitoring. In this paper, a method of simultaneous and continuous estimation of the forces of multiple cables using a self-developed microwave interferometric radar was proposed. In the proposed approach, first, the time-varying modal frequencies are identified by the… Show more

“…estimated the cable tension force of cable-stayed bridge cables using a stress sensor with the elasto-magnetic (EM) effect of ferromagnetic materials [7]. Zhao et al also used microwave intrametric radar to measure the displacement of the Nanjing Eye cable-stayed bridge and estimate the tension force [8]. Most of these studies required the measurement of cable displacement either directly or indirectly.…”

“…To conquer the limitations of those conventional methods, stationary and remote measurement methods have been developed (Park et al, 2015;Tian et al, 2019;Zhao et al, 2020). Ye et al (2013) calculated the deflection variation of structure through pattern matching algorithm, by cross-correlation analysis between the captured images and predefined image.…”

“…In many real‐life structural system identification applications, the measurement of inputs is costly or even not feasible at all, such as the axle loads of trains and vehicles and the wind loads on buildings and wind turbines. This motivated research on output‐only Bayesian filters to indirectly estimate the dynamic forces acting on the structural system (Tian et al., 2020; Zhao et al., 2020). A load reconstruction method based on the KF was proposed by Zhi et al.…”
