Business analytics for strategic management: Identifying and assessing corporate challenges via topic modeling

Abstract: Strategic management requires an assessment of a firm's internal and external environment. Our work extends the body of management tools (e.g. SWOT analysis or growth-share matrix) by proposing an automated text mining framework. Here we draw upon narrative materials from firms (e.g. financial disclosures) and perform topic modeling in order to identify the key issues faced by an organization. We then quantify the use of language along two dimensions: risk and optimism. This reveals a firm's strengths and weak… Show more

“…The central thread relates to the use of topic modeling to map cultural dynamics around social structures. A macro approach involves mapping the meaning structures that comprise business environments (Pröllochs & Feuerriegel, 2018), knowledge profiles of firms (Suominen et al, 2017), emerging fields (Hannigan & Casasnovas, 2019), and political issues (Kim et al, 2018). Researchers have modeled the topics and rhetorical attributes of scientific articles, in turn finding links between the hidden topic structure of scientific communities as "thought collectives" and impacts on knowledge consumption patterns (Antons et al, 2018).…”

“…Besides the three major themes above, key-terms cluster analysis also reveals that big data has a strong impact on every sector, from medical healthcare [24,25,[63][64][65], finance and business [26,[66][67][68], energy [69,70], government [71][72][73][74], education [75][76][77] to transportation [78][79][80]. The main source of big data comes from daily life and activities, for example, social media and networks.…”

“…The need to translate and understand codified information is shown by Pröllochs and Feuerriegel (2018). Associated with the use of the SWOT analysis tool where it is possible to analyze the risks and opportunities of organizational environments, the authors present methods based on advanced analyzes, which can perform all the calculations in a computerized way and, consequently, subsidizing the managers in the update, in the establishment of goals, performance measurement, and assessments with arbitrary frequency.…”
