Burden of Peripheral Artery Disease and Its Attributable Risk Factors in 204 Countries and Territories From 1990 to 2019

Abstract: BackgroundData on burden of peripheral artery disease (PAD) and its attributable risk factors are valuable for policymaking. We aimed to estimate the burden and risk factors for PAD from 1990 to 2019.MethodsWe extracted the data on prevalence, incidence, death, years lived with disability (YLDs), and years of life lost (YLLs) from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 to measure PAD burden. Moreover, the attributable burden to PAD risk factors was also estimated.ResultsGlobally, in 2019, 113,443,017 people l… Show more

“…The prevalence of PAD is increasing worldwide, especially in low-and middle-income countries [21], and it remains frequently underdiagnosed due to a lack of physician and patient awareness [4]. The 5-year follow-up of asymptomatic PAD patients shows a 7% chance of developing CI and cardiovascular mortality is higher in these patients [22].…”

“…Overall, the burden of smoking-related PAD deaths has declined modestly in both men and women over the past three decades due to the intense regulatory and public education efforts. Yet, in 2019, nearly a quarter of PAD-related deaths remain attributable to tobacco use globally (8). Secondhand smoke exposure confirmed by urinary cotinine levels has also been linked to clinical PAD (9).…”

“…Atherothrombotic events represent the main cause of mortality and morbidity in the world, 1,2 involving both the arterial and the venous part of the circulation: myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease, atrial thrombus and embolisms, phlebothrombosis and pulmonary embolisms. Many thrombotic events could be diagnosed before dramatic complications occur.…”
