Building-up host–guest helicate motifs and chains: a magneto-structural study of new field-induced cobalt-based single-ion magnets

Abstract: In this work, we present the synthetic pathway, a refined structural description, complete solid-state characterization and the magnetic properties of four new cobalt(II) compounds of formulas [Co(H2O)6][Co2(H2mpba)3]∙2H2O∙0.5dmso (1), [Co(H2O)6][Co2(H2mpba)3]∙3H2O∙0.5dpss (2),...

“…This is because it is widely recognized that factors such as temperature, molar ratio of reagents, geometric characteristics, and coordination sites of the organic ligands 27–30 can have a significant impact on crystal growth. Moreover, the choice of synthetic strategies, such as stirring, 9,31 diffusion, 32 solvothermal (particularly when mixed organic solvents are employed), 8 and hydrothermal (used when water is the only solvent), 22,33 can also influence the process. Regarding the synthetic approach, it is noteworthy that the solvothermal method is more commonly employed compared to the hydrothermal one for the rational design and synthesis of coordination compounds derived from H 4 bttb or H 2 -2,5pzdc acids (as indicated in Table S1†).…”

“…For Co-MOF 2 , the χ M T value of 6.10 cm 3 K mol –1 at 300 K is higher than the theoretical value of 5.16 cm 3 K mol –1 of two and three-quarters independent high-spin Co (II) ions, which is also caused by the spin–orbit coupling between Co (II) ions . With the decrease of temperature, the χ M T value of Co-MOF 2 gradually decreases.…”

“…In one of very scarce works, Marinho et al synthesized by carefully controlled conditions four variants of Co(II) coordination polymer which differed in their folding. The conformation of bridges manifested itself in the relaxation of the chain-arranged SIMs [45]. However, to the best of our knowledge no study yet addressed the question of the effect of rigidity of bridges connecting SIM centres.…”
