Building the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance network in veterinary medicine (EARS-Vet)

Abstract: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) should be tackled through a One Health approach, as stated in the World Health Organization Global Action Plan on AMR. We describe the landscape of AMR surveillance in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) and underline a gap regarding veterinary medicine. “…Therefore, national surveillance programs are urgently required. To date, there are several international surveillance networks, such as the Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS), the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network (EARS-Net), the China Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (CARSS), and the China Antimicrobial Surveillance Network (CHINET) ( 8 10 ). However, these networks mainly focus on AMR surveillance in adult populations, instead of addressing that in children.…”

Currently, only the VetPath and MycoPath initiatives funded by the pharmaceutical sector in Europe publish such data [16][17][18], although there is a call to launch the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance network in veterinary medicine [19].…”
