Bronchial circulation angiogenesis in the rat quantified with SPECT and micro-CT

Abstract: Introduction-As pulmonary artery obstruction results in proliferation of the bronchial circulation in a variety of species, we investigated this angiogenic response using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and micro-CT.

“…However, with increased pulmonary flow in the right lung, moderate increases lead to larger alveoli, whereas severe increases in pulmonary flow increase the number of alveoli. As shown in our study and those by Haworth et al in pigs (10) Others have made similar observations in adult dogs (21,22,31), rats (17,38,39), and mice (23,37), indicating that, within a prolonged enough period of pulmonary flow reduction, the systemic circulation is recruited to supply the obstructed lung. This recruitment of the systemic circulation may account for the increased density of small arteries observed in the banded left lungs in our study.…”

“…Vascular perfusion is a common strategy in the evaluation of blood vessel parameters [34]. Recently, angiography with lCT has been successfully used to study blood vessels of the lung, kidneys, and tumors [35,36]. It is also applied in the exploration of blood supply to the bone [37].…”

“…The CFD method and these models can assist in the development of new inhalation therapies and the optimization of inhaler devices (Coates et al, 2007;Kleinstreuer et al, 2007). Advances in small animal imaging using micro-CT or MRI have made it possible to study the respiratory system in a specific animal into great detail (Johnson, 2007;Lam et al, 2007;Wietholt et al, 2008). Earlier work by Chaturvedi and Lee (Chaturvedi and Lee, 2005) has used micro CT images to accurately study the morphology of the mouse and canine airway tract based on lung casts and segmentation principles.…”
