Bryophyte communities of restingas in Northeastern Brazil and their similarity to those of other restingas in the country

Restingas are a coastal component of the Atlantic Forest. Th ey experience high temperatures and possess soils with a low capacity to retain water, low nutrient content and high salt concentrations. Studies on bryophytes of restingas have been mostly conducted in Southeastern Brazil, and so we aimed to characterize the bryophyte fl ora of seven areas of restinga in the Northeastern Region and to establish their fl oristic affi nities with other restingas in Brazil. Fifty-fi ve species were found in the studied restingas, the vast majority of which are generalist species with life forms of intermediate tolerance to desiccation and of corticicolous and terrestrial habitat. Th e number of species per area is low compared to the species richness of other restingas in Brazil. A cluster analysis, although based on low similarity, showed that the bryofl ora from the surveyed areas is distinct from those of restingas from Bahia, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, which all form a group, and those of the coast of São Paulo, which also comprised a cluster. Th e heterogeneous climate, soils and vegetation structure of the studied restingas, in comparison those of the Southeast, act as selective fi lters for the species, thereby contributing to the distinction observed in those communities.

ABSTRACT(Mosses as indicators of atmospheric metal deposition in an industrial area of southern Brazil). Caxias do Sul hosts the second largest metal-mechanic pole in Brazil, which increases the risk of atmospheric contamination. With the aim of identifying species that might be useful as indicators of atmospheric deposition of metals, 15 species of mosses from an urban and a rural setting were analyzed and compared with specimens deposited at the Herbarium of the Universidade de Caxias do Sul. Metal concentrations (Zn, Ni, Cd, Cr, Cu and Pb) were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). The Mann-Whitney test indicated concentrations of Zn, Cu, Pb and Cr that were significantly different between the urban and rural areas. Additionally, Concentrations of Zn, Cd, Cu and Pb were significantly higher in recently collected samples. The species Thuidium tomentosum Besch., Sematophyllum subpinnatum (Brid.) E. Britton, Helicodontium capillare (Hedw.) A. Jaeger, Schlotheimia jamesonii (W.-Arnott) Brid. and Meteorium deppei (Hornsch. ex Müll. Hal.) Mitt. are potential biomonitors of atmospheric metal deposition.

ABSTRACT. -We present the results of a survey of the liverwort species occurring in a fragment of dense montane ombrophilous forest in Parque Nacional de Boa Nova, located in a transition zone between Caatinga and Atlantic Forest in southwestern Bahia State, Brazil. A total of 126 species distributed among 41 genera and 14 families were found. Sixteen species are reported for the fi rst time from the state of Bahia, while ten species represent new records for the Northeast Region of Brazil. The family Acrobolbaceae E.A. Hodgs and the genus Dicranolejeunea (Spruce) Schiff n.
