Bridging the Faraoni and Selli oceanic anoxic events: late Hauterivian to early Aptian dysaerobic to anaerobic phases in the Tethys

Abstract: Abstract.A detailed geochemical analysis was performed on the upper part of the Maiolica Formation in the Breggia (southern Switzerland) and Capriolo sections (northern Italy). The analysed sediments consist of well-bedded, partly siliceous, pelagic carbonate, which lodges numerous thin, dark and organic-rich layers. “…The Faraoni, Mid-Barremian and Taxy events are the three episodes of environmental change covered in this analysis (Föllmi, 2012). These episodes correspond to increasing occurrence in organic-rich layers, documented throughout the Tethyan area and possibly J o u r n a l P r e -p r o o f extended to the Northern Atlantic (Cecca et al, 1994;Machhour et al, 1998;Mutterlose and Boeckel, 1998;Baudin, 2005;Föllmi et al, 2012;Stein et al, 2012;Yilmaz et al, 2012;Baudin and Riquier, 2014). “…The oceanic circulation patterns reconstructed for the Vocontian Basin indicate east‐to‐west currents along the northern coast of the basin (Delamette, ; Föllmi et al , ). Moreover, in other parts of the Tethys Ocean, the OAE 1a is classically associated with poorly oxygenated bottom waters, as evidenced by the widespread deposition of black shales, and with strong enrichments in redox‐sensitive elements (Stein et al , ; Föllmi et al , ; Westermann et al , ; Khaled et al , ). Consequently, the waters pushed into the Vocontian Basin via this narrow seaway could have originally been (partly) depleted in redox‐sensitive elements through the so‐called ‘basin reservoir effect’ (Algeo and Lyons, ; Algeo and Tribovillard, ), and the limited renewal of deep‐waters could have further enhanced the initial depletion in dissolved, redox‐sensitive elements in the Vocontian Basin water‐mass.…”
