F or over three decades the main buzzword of development, international relations and policy making has been 'globalisation' . It is a descriptive concept used to characterise processes underway in the global political economy related to production, trade, finance, technology and labour. It has been an overworked term, sometimes evoking the metaphor of a happy 'global village' in which all countries are equal and in which there is smooth mobility not just of finance and goods, but also of labour and technology. The embrace of globalisation has also promised that all ships will rise as the tides of competition and winds of integration buttress the engines of national economies. Inequality and poverty will all be history in this global market utopia according to the promises and rhetoric of globalisation discourse. Or more poignantly, we would all be Americans and would all have been conscripted to the 'end of history' in which the US standard of liberal democracy was also our common standard. However, the realities of today's global political economy are much more complex. This fifth volume in the Democratic Marxism series seeks to explore the remaking of the global political economy over the past few decades in a world of deepening systemic crises (such as climate change and water crises), redistributions of economic power (with China today the largest economy), the rise of the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) bloc and sharpening global rivalries. In this volume we unpack the new patterns of global power within the context of conjunctural and longer spans of history, the remaking of capitalism and the forms of resistance that are emerging. Ainda que o papel preeminente da China na África, especialmente em atividades agrícolas, extrativistas e projetos de infraestrutura em grande escala, possa ser visto como uma nova forma de colonialismo (GARCIA, 2017;LUMMUMBA-KASONGO, 2011), algumas pesquisas 4 Em 1913, foi assinado o primeiro acordo formal sobre a migração de mão de obra moçambicana (Tete) para a Rodésia do Sul, entre as autoridades portuguesas e as rodesianas. 5 Vale a pena ressaltar que as relações da China e da Rússia com a África são de longa data e se remetem ao apoio às guerras de independência de vários países do continente e à disputa política e ideológica entre estas potências no contexto da Guerra Fria.…”

O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a dinâmica das migrações internacionais sul-sul a partir do estudo de caso da recente imigração de zimbabweanos para a província de Tete, Moçambique, historicamente uma região de emigração. Nesse sentido, examinamos as características sociodemográficas desses novos imigrantes, assim como as condições e motivações individuais, familiares e estruturais subjacentes ao fluxo migratório. Para tanto, combinamos dados quantitativos provenientes do Censo moçambicano de 2007 e dos registros de trabalhadores imigrantes da Direção Provincial de Trabalho, Emprego e Segurança Social, com entrevistas semiestruturadas junto aos imigrantes zimbabweanos em Tete. Os resultados indicam uma multiplicidade de fatores que contribuíram para a recente onda de imigração em Tete, com destaque, além das motivações econômicas e de subsistência familiares, para aspectos sociais e culturais relacionados à longa tradição da mobilidade intrarregional na África Austral, facilitada por fronteiras relativamente porosas e fortes laços culturais, linguísticos e de parentesco. Discutimos, também, como a instalação de megaprojetos de mineração com capital brasileiro, em Tete, contribuiu para torná-la atrativa como destino migratório, num contexto em que se assistiam violentas ondas de xenofobia contra imigrantes na África do Sul, principal destino das migrações na região.

Negli ultimi decenni i maggiori cambiamenti nella geografia dello sviluppo sono relativi all'ascesa dei paesi BRICS e in particolare alla Cina in Africa. L'articolo – servendosi dell'esempio fornito, attraverso una ricerca sul campo, dal Centro di dimostrazione tecnologica dell'agricoltura in Tanzania – si propone di esaminare l'evoluzione della cooperazione agricola Cina-Africa come rappresentativa di pratiche e modalità della cooperazione Sud-Sud. Il contributo interroga la presenza cinese in Africa come generatrice di relazioni di dipendenza e, allo stesso tempo, riflette sul ruolo della Cina come elemento di diversificazione della dipendenza africana. La ricerca condotta intende stimolare una riflessione critica sulla cooperazione agricola sino-africana, contribuendo al dibattito geografico circa lo sviluppo delle relazioni BRICS-Sud.
