Abstract: ABSTRACT. The breeding season was investigated in 174 female cats that were acclimated under a natural photoperiod, and determined the interval between birth and initial estrus (puberty) was determined in 125 cats. “…The animals were housed in 50 · 70 · 70-cm stainless cages with glass windows on the east, west and south sides in an animal room controlled at 22 ± 2°C without artificial lighting. The BS of female cats maintained under these conditions was January-July (Tsutsui et al 2004). Animals were fed commercial dry food (Hill's Maintenance Dry, Topeka, KS, USA), and given free access to drinking water.…”

“…Domestic cats are often used as models for developing procedures for reproductive biotechnology that can be applied to assist breeding in wild felids that are threatened with extinction (Wildt et al 1986). Although AI using fresh semen results in better pregnancy results (Tsutsui et al 2004), the use of frozen semen is usually of more interest as it allows for the banking and shipment of semen and facilitates planning of the AI. The length of the cycle in cats is variable and onset of oestrus is sudden.…”
