Breast PET/MRI Hybrid Imaging and Targeted Tracers

Abstract: The recent introduction of hybrid positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) as a promising imaging modality for breast cancer assessment has prompted fervent research activity on its clinical applications. The current knowledge regarding the possible clinical applications of hybrid PET/MRI is constantly evolving, thanks to the development and clinical availability of hybrid scanners, the development of new PET tracers and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. In this stat… Show more

“…In addition, quantitative measurements from 18F-FDG PET are influenced by breast density and, possibly, age [ 27 , 28 ]. Thus, an alternative tracer, such as 18F-FEC, is desirable [ 29 ].…”

“…Our results, though, also indicate that the accuracy of 18F-FEC is lower than the accuracy of contrast-enhanced MRI alone. The clinical role of PET tracers is most relevant in the staging and phenotyping of cancer aggressiveness [ 29 ]. Our results indicate that 18-FEC uptake correlates with lesion characteristics and suggest that it could provide clinically relevant additional information on cancer aggressiveness and lymph node status.…”

“…10,[27][28][29][30] Angiogenesis and metabolism are the 2 hallmarks of cancer that can be evaluated by contrast-enhanced MRI and 18 F-FDG PET. 31 Proliferation can be assessed by DWI, 20 and the increase in metabolism that precedes proliferation can be used as an early marker of tumor growth.…”

“…19 Multiparametric imaging involves combining any of the imagederived information mentioned previoulsy. 20 Attempts are being made to identify the optimal combination of multiple parameters, with the use of radiomics and deep learning as auxiliary tools. With the abundant information provided by multiparametric imaging, researchers are trying to identify more complex characteristics of breast cancer, including proliferation, vascularity, subtype, and even the immune environment, all of which are essential aspects of personalized breast cancer treatment.…”
