Breast Cancer Subtypes and Prognosis: Answers to Subgroup Classification Questions, Identifying the Worst Subgroup in Our Single-Center Series

Abstract: Purpose Many studies report the triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) as the worst subgroup, as such patients do not benefit from anti-hormonal therapy and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) antagonists. While HER2 overexpression was a poor prognostic factor in breast cancer before trastuzumab (Herceptin) was available, TNBC is often reported as the worst BC subgroup since targeted therapy is currently not possible. Since the patience-specific experiences and the current literature did… Show more

“…New treatment strategies are limited for early-stage TNBC, and the prognosis remains poor compared to that of other subtypes ( 16 ). According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines ( 17 ), adjuvant chemotherapy is recommended for TNBC tumors larger than 1 cm, but there is no consensus for smaller tumors.…”

“…Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) represents approximately 15–20% of all breast cancer molecular subtypes [ 3 ]. It is characterized by the absence of these three types of receptors [ 4 ] and tends to have a worse prognosis [ 5 ]. Accurate molecular classification of TNBC is crucial for risk stratification [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…Our model also indicates that AJCC stage contributes the most to the prognosis, followed by histological grade. The inclusion of additional information regarding clinicopathological characteristics provides our nomograms with a more accurate prognosis prediction ability, which can be used to improve the AJCC TNM staging system or as a supplementary version tumor, clinicians can provide appropriate strategy for follow-up and treatment (30). In clinical practice, surgery combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy is currently an important part of the standardized treatment system for breast cancer, and active treatment is of great clinical significance in improving the quality of life and prolonging the survival time for patients (31)(32)(33).…”
