Brain morphology in children with 47,XYY syndrome: a voxel‐ and surface‐based morphometric study

Abstract: The neurocognitive and behavioral profile of individuals with 47,XYY is increasingly documented; however, very little is known about the effect of a supernumerary Y-chromosome on brain development. Establishing the neural phenotype associated with 47,XYY may prove valuable in clarifying the role of Y-chromosome gene dosage effects, a potential factor in several neuropsychiatric disorders that show a prevalence bias towards males, including autism spectrum disorders. Here, we investigated brain structure in 10 … Show more

“…Females with TS exhibit weaknesses in face recognition, facial affect discrimination (especially of fear or anger), interpretation of social cues, theory of mind, and problems in social communication. They also may manifest problems in eye tracking and gaze processing, and present with restricted interests or repetitive behaviors [47,107,[110][111][112][113][114][115]. An overlap between the TS behavioral phenotype and 'idiopathic ASD' has been previously suggested [110].…”

“…Right hemispheric regional differences have been found in 47,XYY boys (n=10), even when controlling for greater overall volume in this group 14 . The right occipital lobe showed increased gray matter volume, while the insula, inferior frontal gyrus and superior temporal cortex volumes were decreased.…”

“…Although most neuroimaging work has focused on 47,XXY groups, a few studies have considered other SCTs. Right hemispheric regional differences have been found in 47,XYY males ( n =10), even when controlling for greater overall volume in this group . The right occipital lobe showed increased grey matter volume, whereas the insula, inferior frontal gyrus, and superior temporal cortex volumes were decreased.…”

Note, however, that direct comparisons between the hemispheres were not reported.…”
