Brain food: rethinking food-borne toxocariasis

Abstract: Human toxocariasis is a neglected tropical disease, which is actually global in distribution and has a significant impact on global public health. The infection can lead to several serious conditions in humans, including allergic, ophthalmic and neurological disorders such as epilepsy. It is caused by the common roundworm species Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati, with humans becoming accidentally infected via the ingestion of eggs or larvae. Toxocara eggs are deposited on the ground when infected dogs, cats an… Show more

“…The true number of cases that occur each year is difficult to estimate as most covert infections go undiagnosed due to less severe systemic manifestations and nonspecific laboratory abnormalities 28 ; also some cases reported in the uK may have been acquired abroad. 18 Of note, Toxocara infection is not a notifiable disease in the uK 41 or in the usa. 30 The true incidence of human toxocarosis has been suggested as a gap in the evidence.…”

“…7,11 Transmission to humans occurs via consumption of infectious larvated eggs in contaminated soil, sand or water. 5,12,13 Contact with eggs on the hair of companion animals 14 and consumption of undercooked meat or offal 15 are also possible routes of infection. In definitive canid and felid hosts, larvae generally demonstrate entero-hepatic-pulmonary migration before returning to the intestine to develop into adults, resulting in respiratory and intestinal pathology.…”
