“…The observation that bacterial endocarditis is usually to be found on valves deformed by previous disease was made by Paget in 1844.~ 6 In 1870 Church7 confirmed the association of ruptured intracranial aneurysm with heart disease concluding; &dquo;there can no longer be any doubt that vegetations within the heart, embolism and aneurysm of the cerebral arteries are related to each other as cause and effect and not as mere accidental coincidence.&dquo; Osler8 referred to intracranial hemorrhage in the course of bacterial endocarditis in his Goulstonian lectures of 1885; he observed however that suppurative intracranial complications were much more common, an opinion since endorsed by others. [9][10][11][12][13] Five years after Osler was Goulstonian lecturer the honor fell to NewtonPitt.14 He reviewed 9000 autopsies performed at Guy's Hospital and found 23 intracranial aneurysms; 16 of these were associated with bacterial endocarditis.
