Botanical origin and antioxidant activities of propolis from the Irano-Turanian region

Abstract: Propolis is a natural bioactive mix and a traditional medicine that has been used for treating several complications. The bioactive properties of propolis are dependent on its botanical origin. This study investigated the pollen composition, antioxidant activities, and the total phenol and total flavonoid content of a propolis sample from the Refahiye (Erzincan, Turkey) region. Melissopalynological analysis conducted according to the relevant literature revealed that the pollen profile of the sample primarily … Show more

“…Ascorbic acid also had a higher scavenging capacity than Asela and Gambela propolis. This finding was in agreement with the report of Turkish propolis (18.34 ± 0.08 μg/ml) [68], and higher than the IC 50 obtained from Malaysian stingless bee propolis (15-270 μg/ml) [58] and Korean propolis (43 and 269 μg/ml). The variation in scavenging activity could be due to their resin plant origin, climate, and resin collection time by the bees [30].…”

“…There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the H 2 O 2 values between Asela, Sheka, Gambela propolis and standard ascorbic acids %inhibition (H 2 O 2 ). The percentage inhibition of H 2 O 2 of this finding was higher than the Turkish propolis (11.72 ± 0.04 μg/ml) [68] and lower than the Egyptian propolis (67%-79.25%) [69].…”

“…Because the propolis biochemical content is directly related with plants that visited by bees. Either our country or around the world there are many melissopalynological researches on propolis (Park et al 2002;Gencay Çelemli and Sorkun 2012;Popova et al 2013;Bayram 2015;Kızılpınar et al 2017;Tatlısulu and Özgör 2023). This preliminary study was carried out for contribute the former researches on this subject and lead beekeepers to choose valid areas to place their beehives.…”
