Abstract: This study is the first to apply Borg's psychophysical equation to measuring responses to strength training with weights machines. Theoretical constructs of Borg's scales were assessed in younger and older adults to estimate the appropriate load and number of repetitions required to meet recommended practice guidelines. A younger group (YG; 20 males, 20 females; aged 19-38 years) and older group (OG; 13 males, 13 females; aged 50-75 years) participated in 3 experiments. Experiment 1: YG performed 2-repetitions… Show more

“…Although patterns of RPE are similar between populations, some research suggests that older adults (~75 years) might under-estimate RPE compared with young adults 8 this difference diminishes as RT nears MF 20 . Further, most research suggests that any gender differences in RPE are minor 8,17,41 and both these and age differences are not particularly meaningful 4 . Also, most research relating to RPE during RT has used participants with ≥ 3 months prior regular RT experience similar to the sample in the present study.…”

“…Numerous studies have revealed that participants report increasingly higher RPE values with increasing load/torque demands [3][4][5][6][7][8] even when matched for volume-load (repetitions x load) [9][10][11] . In addition a number of studies have reported a relationship between load, RPE and physiological measures such as: electromyography amplitude 3,6,8,12 , heart rate 5 , and blood lactate 12,13 .…”

“…The Borg CR-10 scale has been used to quantify the perception of physical exertion [10]. Many studies have validated the CR-10 scale for measurement of the intensity of resistance exercise [7,9,13,[15][16][17][18][19][20][21].…”

“…RPE can be used to track the progress of training in resistance exercise and may also be appropriate for quantifying the intensity of resistance exercise and prescribing an appropriate program [6,7]. A number of recent investigations have indicated that RPE is related to various indices of resistance exercise intensity [8,9].…”
