The present study used a bioecological approach to examine the influence of personal characteristics (maturity status), process (accumulated deliberate practice), and contextual factors (including age group, competition level, sport type, and state) on the variation of sources of enjoyment among young female athletes. We also explored the effect of the dynamic interactions of time with personal characteristics and process (chronological age, menarche age, and years of accumulated deliberate practice in a specific sport). We considered 243 young female athletes (171 basketball players, and 72 volleyball players) aged, on average, 15.0 years (ranging from 10.1 to 19.7 years). Repeated measures were collected from a sub-sample of 84 athletes (41 basketball players, 43 volleyball players) aged, on average, 14.0 years (ranging from 11.5 to 18.1 years) at baseline, across competitive seasons during the survey period to fully operationalize the bioecological approach. Age group, menarche status, onset of specialization, competitive level, sport, state, and self-reported measures of sources of enjoyment, using the Sources of Enjoyment in Youth Sports Questionnaire (SEYSQ), were recorded. We used Bayesian hierarchical models to model the responses of the players in the SEYSQ. The young female athletes mainly agreed (response 5 in the Likert-like scale) with the statements in each factor of the SEYSQ. There was no variation in the responses by SEYSQ factors associated with process (onset of specialization), person (menarcheal status), and context (age group, sport, competitive level, and state), when considering the cross-sectional data. When aligning the three chronosystems (chronological age, menarche age, and accumulated sport-specific deliberate practice), it was possible to identify the importance of the sport context to the changes in the sources of enjoyment across the development of young Brazilian female athletes between 12 and 18 years. Overall, our findings underscore the necessity of incorporating time in ecological approaches to youth sports research through a repeated-measures design to properly operationalize the bioecological approach. The results of the present study do not support the argument that early specialization may lead to low enjoyment and consequent compromise in commitment and sustained participation in youth sports programs.

Science education that fosters scientific competency and engagement prepares students to become informed civic participants in modern society. Teaching strategies that encourage scientific engagement are especially important in rural settings, as these students are less likely to pursue scientific careers or use science in their everyday lives. To this aim, we implemented a citizen science approach in science education, an approach that enables K‐12 grade students to participate in locally relevant and authentic scientific research, in suburban and rural 5th and 9th–12th grade classrooms. While most citizen science education initiatives are led by experienced scientists, we recognized the additional level of learning that may arise from positioning undergraduate students as curricular designers of the citizen science classroom activities and partners for the classroom teachers. This study evaluates perceived changes in science engagement, science identity, and science competency that emerged as a result of participating in this citizen science initiative, both for the 5th and 9th–12th school students and the undergraduate instructors. Classroom teachers reported that students demonstrated an increased level of engagement with and excitement about science. The undergraduate instructors reported a renewed sense of confidence in their science abilities and a deepened sense of place in the science community. Finally, the educators involved in this project, both classroom K‐12 teachers and undergraduate higher education educators, observed the benefits of this model for connecting students at different points in their science learning journeys. In our discussion, we articulate the benefits and challenges of implementing a multilevel approach to citizen science education.

IntroductionDisordered eating among adolescents is of increasing concern given associated physical and mental health sequelae. Cognitions underlying disordered eating are formed in childhood and adolescence. Parents are a significant presence during this period, so it is critical to understand how they influence their adolescent's eating cognitions and behaviors.MethodsQualitative analysis using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) methodology was employed to consider the lived experiences of 10 Australian adolescents (14–19 years), 60% female, as they engaged with their parents in a range of weight, shape, and eating communications.ResultsOur inductive IPA revealed three key themes representing adolescents' experiences and meaning‐making: Parents as Influencers—adolescents acknowledged parents are influencers (objects) within a wider context of community and cultural norms (symbols) and can be protective for peer influence on body image ideals; Expression and Perception—the “what” (weight‐talk as an object) and the “how” (objects as independent influences) of gendered parental communication related to health and fitness ideals and illustrated diverse interpretations of both verbal and non‐verbal expression; and Fertile Soil and Maturity—the adolescent's characteristics and context influence perceptions of communication, a fear of deviating from norms, and an overarching focus on being “healthy” yet not always knowing what that was. Perception of bidirectional communication also offered valuable insights into potential dangers through family loyalty and in‐group permissions.ConclusionsFindings highlight implications for the nuanced influence of parental communication and illustrate the pivotal role of parents within the bioecosystem of adolescent development.
