Border surveillance monitoring using Quadcopter UAV-Aided Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: In this paper we propose a novel cooperative bordersurveillance solution, composed of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) deployed terrestrially to detect and track trespassers, and a set of lightweight unmanned aircraft vehicles (UAVs) in the form of quadcopters that interact with the deployed WSN to improve the border surveillance, the detection and investigation of network failures, the maintenance of the sensor network, the tracking of trespasser, the capture and transmission of realtime video of the intrusion… Show more

“…A review of the current state of UAV regulations on the global scale is presented in Berrahal et al 39 The applied methodological approach includes research assessment of UAV regulations through extensive literature review and a comparative analysis of national regulatory frameworks. It studies the statuses of different regulations since early 2000s, as countries started to establish legal framework to protect its airspace.…”

“…Cooperative wireless networks composed of small UAVs are cost-effective and easy to deploy and can facilitate communication on the go through self-managed ad hoc Wi-Fi networks to help the rescue teams in tragic events [5]. Such networks can also be deployed in border surveillance and patrolling [6,7], wildfire monitoring [8,9], and extending the coverage of ad hoc networks by using the UAV as a relay [10][11][12], with many other applications listed in [13,14]. On top of that, unmanned aerial base stations (UABSs) are used in natural disasters for public safety communication to save lives, property, and national infrastructure [15].…”

“…The applications of UAVs are constantly increasing. For example, UAVs are used for search and rescue operations [3]- [5], border tracking [6], observation [7]- [9], monitoring [10], [11], reconnaissance [12], target tracking [13], disaster management [13] and creating large-scale maps [14]. Completing difficult missions without endangering human life is the most important reason for this increase [15], [16].…”
