Bony cochlear nerve canal stenosis and speech discrimination in pediatric unilateral hearing loss

Abstract: There is a significant association between BCNC stenosis and impaired speech discrimination, independent of degree of hearing loss. Further investigation is needed to determine whether BCNC stenosis is a poor prognostic factor for auditory rehabilitation.

“…Corresponding to the finding of cochlear aperture stenosis on HRCT in these studies, 33% of patients with UHL revealed cochlear nerve deficiency on magnetic resonance imaging in another study. 11 In accordance with those previous reports, 11,12,[23][24][25][26] 17 of 55 patients with UHL (30.9%) were identified as having IEMs in the present study, with cochlear aperture stenosis being the most prevalent IEM (15 of 55 patients with UHL [27.3%]).…”

“…Based on our previous analysis 15 , we defined cochlear nerve canal stenosis as a diameter of ≤1.4 mm in the axial plane, near the lower limit of the thresholds presented in other investigations. In this study, 17% (22 of 128) of children with unilateral SNHL were found to have BCNC stenosis; this percentage is smaller than other reports 13 , likely due to our tighter diagnostic criteria.…”

“…The internal auditory canal (IAC) was diagnosed to be narrow if its diameter was 3 mm or less (Sennaroǧlu & Saatci, 2002). Bony cochlear nerve canal (BCNC) stenosis was diagnosed if the diameter was less than 1.4 mm (Purcell et al, 2015).…”
