Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells Accelerate the Morphological and Functional Recovery of Neovaginas

Abstract: Vaginal reconstruction is the main solution to the problem of sexuality and gender roles for patients with no vagina. A tissue‐engineered vagina may be the best choice. However, many defects have been found in neovaginas reconstructed with a graft only. In this study, we investigated whether a stem cell‐seeded graft would accelerate the morphological and functional recovery of neovaginas. CM‐DiI‐labeled bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)‐seeded small intestinal submucosa (SIS) (SIS+MSCs group) was used fo… Show more

“…The early establishment of a complete network of blood vessels can supply nutrients and oxygen to promote cell survival and vaginal tissue regeneration. Many efforts have been made, including scaffold functionalization with growth factors, 49 co-implantation of scaffolds with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), 31,50 and the prevascularization of tissue-engin-eered grafts. 51 However, the clinical application of these techniques still requires more extensive and in-depth research.…”

“…Thus, MSC can be seen as in situ bioreactors delivering growth factors to neighboring cells. MSC have the ability to induce smooth muscle regeneration from the gut and the bladder [114,115] and also skeletal muscle regeneration [116,117]. Thus, MSC therapy may promote the healing and regeneration of both IAS and EAS.…”

“…Ning Zhang et al of The Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University, Shijiazhuang, China, investigated whether a stem cell‐seeded graft would accelerate the morphological and functional recovery of neovaginas. CM‐DiI‐labeled bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)‐seeded small intestinal submucosa (SIS) (SIS+MSCs group) was used for vaginal reconstruction in a rat model; unseeded SIS (SIS group) was used as a control.…”
