Purpose To evaluate the influence of alloy/zirconia primer and 10‐methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP)‐containing resin layer treatments on the shear bond strength (SBS) of composite resin to zirconia after aging. Materials and Methods Sixty zirconia (Y‐TZP) blocks were air‐abraded (35‐µm Al2O3) and divided into 6 experimental groups (n = 10) in terms of primer/resin layer as follows: (1) control, without any primer or resin; (2) AP, Alloy Primer; (3) ZPP, Z‐Prime Plus; (4) PL/ZPP, Z‐Prime Plus with light polymerization; (5) AP+SEB, Alloy Primer along with light‐cured bonding resin of a self‐etch adhesive system (SE Bond); and (6) ZPP+SEB, Z‐Prime Plus with SE Bond. After composite resin placement and light polymerization, the specimens were stored in distilled water (37°C for 4 months) and thermal‐cycled for 6000 cycles. The SBS was tested with a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis of the SBS data was performed with one‐way ANOVA, followed by HSD Tukey test (α = 0.05). Results There were significant differences between the groups (p < 0.001, F = 116.5). All the groups revealed significantly higher SBS than the control (p < 0.001). ZPP+SEB group exhibited the highest SBS (16.14 ± 2.52 MPa) and AP group the lowest SBS (7.00 ± 1.97 MPa) among experimental groups; both had significant differences with the other groups (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences between ZPP, PL/ZPP, and AP+SEB groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions The bond strength between zirconia ceramic and composite resin was affected by different primers/resin layer. Applying an MDP‐containing resin layer along with both primers resulted in significant enhancement of SBS. This improvement for Z‐Prime Plus was significantly higher than that of Alloy Primer.

B io ce ramic s D e v e lo pmen t a n d A pp licatio n s Abstract Purpose: To assess the influence of a sandblasting surface treatment on the shear bond strength (SBS) between a recently introduced Resin Nano-Ceramic (RNC) CAD/CAM material and two resin cements.Methods: 40 RNC blocks were divided into two groups (n=20): a control (C) and a test group (S_50) to which air abrasion (50 µm, 0.28 MPa, and 10s) was applied. Each group was divided into two subgroups (n=10) according to the applied luting material: a self-etch dual-cure resin cement (LP) and a dual-cure resin cement (LR). SBSs were determined with a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Fracture patterns were evaluated by a stereomicroscope (25x) and classified into adhesive, cohesive and mixed. One-way ANOVA test (α=.01) was used to establish differences between groups, considering SBS as dependent and the type of surface treatment as independent variable. Results:Mean SBS values (MPa) and standard deviations (SD) for the experimental groups were: [C-LP]: 8.68 (1.16); [C-LR]: 15.32 (3.93); [S_50-LP]: 13.91 (2.58); [S_50-LR]: 15.77 (4.12). A statistically significant difference (p<0.001) was found between [C-LP] and the other three groups. Sandblasting positively affected (p<0.01) the selfadhesive cement adhesion to nano-ceramic resin.Group C_LP showed 100% of adhesive fractures, while S_50_LP had some cohesive (20%) and mixed fractures (10%). The fracture pattern of group C_LR was 60% cohesive, 20% adhesive and 20% mixed, while group S_50-LR showed 100% of cohesive failure. Conclusion:Within the limitations of this study, sandblasting of the RNC surface is recommended when the tested self-adhesive resin cement is used for luting, in order to significantly improve bond strength values. For the luting agent LR -associated with a universal adhesive system -satisfactory adhesion values were achieved regardless an air abrasion pre-treatment.

Self-adhesive, dual-polymerizing resin cements require no treatment to the prepared tooth surfaces before cementation. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of curing mode on bond strength (BS) of three cementing systems to bovine dentin. Methods: The buccal enamel surfaces of 50 bovine incisors were removed to expose dentin and to flat the surface. The teeth were divided into five groups (n=10), which consisted of two resin cements (Multilink and Clearfil SA Cement) that were tested in dual-(halogen light for 40 s) and self-cured modes, and a control (RelyX ARC). Two cylinders of resin cements (1.0 mm X 0.75 mm) were prepared on each bonded dentin surface. After 24h at 37oC, resin cylinders were subjected to micro-shear testing in a universal testing machine (4411/Instron -0.5 mm/min). Data were statistically analyzed by two-way ANOVA, Tukey and Dunnett`s test (5%). Results: Multilink showed higher BS than those observed on Clearfil SA. Light-curing resulted in higher BS for both Multilink and Clearfil SA. When Multilink was light-cured, no significant difference on BS was demonstrated between it and RelyX ARC. Conclusions: The highest BS values were obtained in control group and light-cured Multilink resin cement.
