L'établissement d'un premier axe de développement peut être défini précocement pendant l'ovogenèse (cas le plus fréquent chez les organismes triblastiques) ou plus tardivement, jusqu'au moment du premier clivage (en particulier chez les cténaires et les cnidaires, que nous ne traitons pas ici). Un deuxième axe peut être spécifié dès l'ovogenèse (drosophile) ou plus tardivement, durant la gastrulation (brachiopodes) [4]. Cette analyse, fondée sur les relations phylogénétiques entre organismes, suggère que les diblastiques ancestraux établissent leurs axes plus tardivement que les triblastiques, qui constituent les modèles principaux d'étude du développement. Les préoccupations «évo-dévo» redonnent un nouvel intérêt aux comparaisons embryologiques entre espèces. S'il existe indéniablement de grandes différences d'un phylum à l'autre (Tableau I), des différences existent aussi à l'intérieur de certains taxons, comme celui des néma-todes où les mécanismes qui président à l'établissement des axes varient d'une espèce à l'autre [5]. À l'opposé, dans d'autres taxons comme celui des ascidies, ces méca-nismes semblent relativement bien conservés [3]. À l'heure actuelle, la drosophile et C. elegans fournissent la plupart des clés des mécanismes génétiques et > Dans un premier article (voir m/s n°4, avril 2004), nous avons souligné que des déterminants de polarité ou de développement précoce et les mécanismes qui président à leur localisation et à leur expression n'ont pour l'instant été identifiés que dans quelques espèces. Dans ces espèces -l'insecte Drosophila melanogaster, le ver Caenorhabditis elegans, le crapaud Xenopus laevis et les ascidies Ciona intestinalis et Halocynthia roretzi -l'ovogenèse, la fécondation, les modes de division et de développement diffèrent considéra-blement mais des thèmes communs apparaissent (rôle des ARNm corticaux, des protéines de polarité PAR, réorganisations relayées par le cytosquelette). Nous revenons ici sur ces différences et ces similitudes et les restituons dans un contexte chronologique, de l'ovocyte à la gastrula.
