Phantom limbs do occur in young children as well as in older individuals who underwent amputation in infancy or early childhood (Easson, 1961; Lacroix et al, 1992; Poeck, 1964; Sohn, 1914). The evidence that phantom limbs are reported by individuals with congenital absence of limbs (Vetter & Weinstein, 1967; Weinstein & Screen, 1961; Weinstein, Sersen & Vetter, 1964) provides some of the strongest data to support the suggestion that the phantom limb represents the perceptual correlate of an innate, neural substrate of the body experience (Melzack, 1989).…”
