“…Such phenomenon has already been identified in the USA where the reassortment between a EHDV-6 strain of unknown origin and a endemic strain of EHDV-2 generated a reassortant virus able to cause severe outbreaks in deer (Allison et al, 2010). More recently, the OIE Reference Laboratory for Bluetongue in Italy (Lorusso et al, 2013) identified a reassortant strain BTV-4/1 during outbreaks in sheep (Sardinia-2012) caused by BTV-1 and BTV-4.…”

“…Long distance spread of BTV from endemic regions to adjacent uninfected areas can occur via the wind‐borne dissemination of virus‐infected midges, especially over water (Sedda et al., ; Burgin et al., ). Thus, novel strains of BTV regularly are introduced by windborne midges from Indonesia to the ‘Top End’ of Australia, and into Mediterranean Europe from North Africa (Calistri et al., ; Lorusso et al., ; Eagles et al., ). Infected midges were likely responsible for the spread of BTV‐16 from Italy to Croatia (Listeš et al., ), from Sardinia to Corsica (BTV‐2 in 2000, BTV‐4 in 2003, BTV‐16 in 2004, BTV‐1 in 2013) and BTV‐8 from mainland Europe to the UK in 2007 (Gloster et al., ; Szmaragd et al., ).…”

“…The analysis of all genome segments is crucial when a novel BT outbreak occurs in a given area, even more so when multiple serotypes circulate at the same time or when modified live vaccines have been used in the past in the outbreak area. BTV serotype 1 (BTV-1) reoccurred in Sardinia, Italy, in 2012 (3) and 2013. Unlike in 2012, in 2013, BTV-1 moved toward Corsica, Sicily, and mainland Italy.…”
