“…In another case-control study in West Bengal, odds ratios for arsenicrelated skin lesions did not differ by blood selenium levels (21). It is unclear, however, whether the blood selenium levels observed in cases were a consequence or a contributing factor to blackfoot disease or arsenic-related skin lesions in these case-control analyses.…”

“…Additionally, animal studies have shown an interaction between selenium and arsenic, such that uptake of one of these elements causes release, redistribution, or elimination of the other element by urinary and/or biliary routes (16,17). However, findings from epidemiologic studies about the protective effect of selenium intake on risks of arsenic-related diseases, such as premalignant skin lesions and blackfoot disease (a unique peripheral vascular disease in lower extremities related to high levels of arsenic exposure), in populations exposed to arsenic exposure have been inconclusive (13,(18)(19)(20)(21). Limitations of these studies include small sample sizes, unavailability of prediagnostic selenium levels (in observational studies), and methodologic shortcomings, such as the lack of blindness in randomization (in intervention studies).…”

“…To simulate at least one aspect of the physiological conditions, the solution of L-methionine was used containing the physiological levels (20 μM) of this significant sulfur-containing biomolecule [25].…”

“…The clinical features are characterized by hyper-and hypo-pigmentation, keratosis and various systemic manifestations like weakness, anaemia, chronic lung disease, peripheral neuropathy, liver fibrosis, gangrene of the limbs and cancers of the skin, lung and urinary bladder (6)(7)(8) . Studies on populations in Taiwan, India and Argentina exposed to arsenic through drinking water have suggested that malnutrition increases the risk of arsenic-induced diseases (9)(10)(11)(12)(13) . Several human studies have identified associations between malnutrition and arsenicinduced skin lesions, skin cancer and cardiovascular effects (12,14) .…”
