Abstract: Gentamicin is an effective widely used antibiotic, but the risk of nephrotoxicity and oxidative damage limit its long-term use. Hence, the current study aims to elucidate such hazardous effects. To achieve the study aim male Wistar albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) were exposed to gentamicin to investigate the resultant blood chemical changes and renal histological alterations. In comparison with control rats, gentamicin produced outstanding tubular, glomerular and interstitial alterations that included degenera… Show more

“…In the current work, serum creatinine levels and BUN were significantly increased in gentamicin group compared with control group. These results are coordinated with other earlier researches (Alarifi et al, ; Bekheet et al, ). Significant reduction in serum creatinine and BUN was observed in gentamicin rats treated with rosmarinic acid, lycopene or combined rosmarinic acid and lycopene as compared with gentamicin group.…”

“…The exact mechanism of hepatotoxicity is not well understood yet but it is believed that it increases the production of free radicals which lead to create oxidative stress in the body (Alarifi et al, 2012). Silymarin was chosen for the present study as a standard because of its high antioxidant property and its free radicals scavenging activity (Mosallanejad et al, 2012).…”

“…Following aminoglycosides treatment approximately 5-10% patients have to face adverse effects like hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity due to production of free oxygen radicals. Gentamicin produces free oxygen radicals by acting on mitochondria of hepatocytes and accelerates the lipid peroxidation process (Alarifi et al, 2012). From the history of human being polyherbal formulations are in use to cure different ailments.…”

“…Feeding diet supplemented with 10% of celery, lowered the elevated serum level of liver enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase) and blood lipids in rats [3]. Rats were exposure to gentamicin (GM) can induce significant histological alterations in the kidney as well as remarkable blood chemical changes that might indicate marked renal failure [4]. It is well established that rats were injected with gentamicin sulfate (100 mg/ kg/day i.p.)…”
