Blood Biomarkers for Uveal Melanoma

Abstract: Uveal melanoma disseminates hematogenously, and blood biomarkers may be useful for prognosis and for monitoring disease progression. Melanoma-associated, metastatic and immune factors have been measured in the blood of patients with uveal melanoma, as have circulating melanoma cells. Most of the biomarkers were derived from studies in cutaneous melanoma. For various biological and/or technical reasons, these assessments have not demonstrated the accuracy required for effective prognostic or monitoring assays. … Show more

“…Obtaining uveal melanoma tumors for genotyping can be problematic. There is a need for blood biomarkers [ 10 ]. miRs are very stable in blood due in part to their incorporation into microparticles and exosomes, and serum and plasma levels of miRs are also under investigation as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in cancer and other diseases [ 11 ].…”

“…With availability of highly accurate prognostication tests 11,12 for uveal melanoma and the trend toward adjuvant therapy, 28,29 systemic staging for metastasis at baseline followed by periodic surveillance for metastasis will increasingly become an important component of the overall management strategy that may be tailored to a patient's prognostic status and the adjuvant therapy that he or she might be receiving. “…This has determined that the most effective measure against this type of cancer is its early detection. As uveal melanoma tumours spread via the bloodstream, blood biomarkers may be useful to detect metastases early on and to monitor disease progression or the response to treatment (154).…”
