Abstract: AimThe intrathecal baclofen pump is an effective treatment for spasticity. However, long‐term results have reported patients’ dissatisfaction and perception of disability. Potential causes include a frequent need for baclofen pump refill and risks of complications. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long‐term maintenance, complications and clinical outcome of intrathecal baclofen pumps.Patients and MethodsWe conducted a 16‐year retrospective cohort study of patients with spasticity treated with a… Show more

“…They may appear at any time, after implantation or after revision [11,20]. Long-term aftercare with baclofen pump refill was proved to be safe, with an infection rate of 0.6 % per puncture for each refill [4]. In our experience with intrathecal baclofen therapy, we have not observed any infection related to surgery or refill of the pump to date.…”

“…When oral therapy is insufficient or the patient does not tolerate the drug side effects, intrathecal therapy may be considered. If testing for intrathecal baclofen therapy (ITB) is successful, these patients can be effectively treated [4].…”

“…AEs within the PSR are collected prospectively with risk-based monitoring to ensure accuracy and completeness. The risks associated with ITB therapy and the SynchroMed infusion system have been well studied, with publications on individual patient cases or series reports (20)(21)(22)(23) and as many as 359 patients (24). The 1743 patients enrolled in the PSR and their average 44.6 months and cumulative 6481 patient-years of follow-up provide a currently unmatched source of safety data.…”

“…Intrathecal baclofen pumps (ITBPs) have become a valuable alternative to traditional oral baclofen in cases where oral baclofen has not provided significant im-provement in spasticity [1][2][3][4][5]. That said, ITBPs also require a significant initial operation, are prone to complications (e.g., catheter fracture, pump malfunction, postoperative infection, etc.…”

“…That said, ITBPs also require a significant initial operation, are prone to complications (e.g., catheter fracture, pump malfunction, postoperative infection, etc. ), and must be replaced every 5-6 years due to battery end-of-life [2,3,[5][6][7]. As such, ITBP placement incurs significant costs that are not otherwise present in traditional baclofen use.…”
