Blepharitis

Abstract: Gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria grew more often in patients with Demodex. Demodex seems to be a mediator of chronic blepharitis; we recommend that mites be sought in cilia of chronic blepharitis patients. Mercury ointment, 2% and lindan proved efficient for specific therapy, the main problem being the laborious application and toxicity.

“…In the examination of healthy people by light microscopy, Demodex mites were detected in 6 cases (2.8%). Given the ability of the mites to move over the surface of the skin at a speed of 8-16 mm/h, 9,10 as well as random selection of the study site, this fact does not prove the absence of mites. Given the species belonging to Demodex mites in healthy people (all had Demodex brevis); the absence of a clinical picture of the condition confirms that this species belongs to saprophyte of facial skin.…”

“…Considering the ability of mites to move along the surface of the skin at a speed of 8-16 mm/h, as well as random selection of the study site, this fact does not prove the absence mites [10,11]. Mites of the genus Demodex in the number <5 individuals per 1 cm² were detected much more often (n=40, 37.8%, respectively).…”

“…Die Rolle von Demodex folliculorum bei der Entstehung einer Blepharitis ist umstritten [1,2]. Demodex folliculorum scheinen eher in der Unterhaltung als in der Pathogenese einer Blepharitis eine Rolle zu spielen.…”
