Bismuth Modified Disposable Pencil‐Lead Electrode for Simultaneous Determination of 2‐Nitrophenol and 4‐Nitrophenol by Net Analyte Signal Standard Addition Method

Abstract: A pencil-lead electrode modified with a thin film of bismuth, that is "environmental friendlier" than mercury, was used for electrocatalytic reduction of 2-nitrophenol (2-NP) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) by differential pulse voltammetry and net analyte signal standard addition method (NASSAM). The modified electrode has electrocatalytic behavior toward reduction of 2-NP and 4-NP. Because of similar structures of analytes, at the modified electrode they have high overlapped signals that determination of them in th… Show more

“…Irreversibility was indicated by the absence of oxidation peaks in the reverse anodic scan. These results agree with the data obtained with other types of bismuth electrodes (BiFEs and BBEs) [1,[16][17][18][19][20]. Mixtures of the three phenols led to severe peak voltammetric peak overlap (in both the CV and DP voltammetric mode) in which visual peak identification and assignment was impossible.…”

“…The mechanism of nitrophenol reduction at bismuth electrodes has been studied and discussed in earlier papers [1,17,18]. In agreement with these studies, single reduction peaks were obtained for both 2-NP and 4-NP while two peaks (I and II) were obtained for 2,4-DNP; peak I corresponds to the reduction of the orthonitro group and peak II to the reduction of the para-nitro group.…”

“…10,11 Therefore, NP has been listed as a priority pollutant by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). 12,13 However, the toxicity of nitrophenol isomers is different; o-NP and p-NP are highly toxic and exhibit much more serious impact on the growth and metabolic activities of the organism. 14, 15 The permissible limit of NP in the environment has been given.…”
