Biomass production and wheat grain yield and its relationship with NDVI as a function of nitrogen availability

Abstract: Evaluate the ideal doses of nitrogen fertilizer on wheat crops, in addition to avoiding unnecessary costs, assists in sustainability of the production system. The objective was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen (N) doses on the biomass and grain productivity, and the correlation between the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), biomass at flowering and grain yield, in wheat crop. The experiment was carried out in the experimental area of UFRGS, in Eldorado do Sul, in 2017 and 2018, under randomized b… Show more

“…This dual benefit is critical, with biomass serving not only as a measure of crop productivity but also as an essential resource for livestock nutrition. Trentin et al [ 21 ] demonstrate the significant impact of nitrogen fertilizer dosing on durum wheat biomass production, underscoring the importance of nitrogen availability in enhancing biomass and its potential benefits for livestock nutrition (Trentin et al [ 21 ]). Additionally, the study by Souissi et al [ 22 ] evaluates the effects of nitrogen fertilization on the agronomic and economic performances of durum wheat in rainfed semi-arid environments similar to those of our study.…”

“…These VIs enhance the spectral interaction of plants and correlate with biophysical parameters of vegetation, such as canopy biomass. According to [11], the performance of vegetation indices, including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), was evaluated in wheat crops by correlating them with biophysical parameters, and NDVI showed better correspondence with biomass. It was also used for estimating total eucalyptus biomass at local and regional scales through the NDVI, Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), Simple Ratio (SR) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) [12].…”
