Electrorotation (ER) is a technique allowing the characterization of the surface properties of a variety of supra-molecular aggregates and living cultured cells as well as cellular organelles and biological materials in general. In particular, this technique allows measuring two important physical parameters of the cell membrane: specific capacitance and specific conductance. These parameters are strictly related to the structure/function relationships of the biological membrane; ER becomes thus a powerful means to investigate a number of phenomena involving the membrane integrity. These phenomena may originate from treatments with exogenous molecules and/or from pathological effects. Concerning these aspects, the study of the transfer of exogenous material (i.e. cat-anionic vesicles or liposomes) across the cell membrane assumes a high importance. This review is focused on the physical functioning principles of ER and on the quantitative analysis of the experimental measurements. This work also reports on different fields of application of ER with particular reference to data obtained in our laboratory. The investigation of the alterations of the cytoplasmic membrane function, as evidenced by this strategy, will be illustrated in detail.

Natural products endowed of biological activity represent a primary source of commodities ranging from nutrition to therapeutic agents, as well as cosmetic tools and recreational principles. These natural means have been used by mankind for centuries, if not millennia. They are commonly used all over the world in socio-economical contexts, but are particularly attractive in disadvantaged areas or economically emerging situations all over the world. This is very likely due to the relatively easy recovery of these bioactive principles from the environment, at a low if any cost, as well as ease of administration and the general popular compliance concerning their consumption/ingestion. In this concise review, we focus on some popular bioactive principles of botanical origin which find a wide use in the Madagascan populations. However, due to space limitations, only some of the most common and largely diffused principles in this country are considered. Finally, a possible nanotechnological administration is discussed in the case where a potential therapeutic usage is envisaged.

Abstract-We have evaluated the modulation of degenerative events at the retinal and optic nerve level in a rat model system. Degeneration was ameliorated in aging rats by the combined oral administration of -lipoic acid and superoxide dismutase. Twenty four month-old rats were fed ad libitum with a diet supplemented by these two compounds. Positive control rats received a compound-free diet, while the negative control group consisted of untreated young animals. The cyto-protective effects of -lipoic acid and superoxide dismutase were investigated by morphological analysis of retinal and optic nerve head sections. The level of nuclear DNA damage was assessed by TUNEL fluorescent reaction. Lipo-peroxidation assays evaluated the oxidative stress and consequent alteration of the cell membrane function. Apoptotic phenomena were investigated by immuno-localization and Western blotting to measure the expression of caspase-3 and inducible nitric oxide synthase. The results reported in this work provide evidence that-lipoic acid and superoxide dismutase counteract the degenerative damage in aging animals, reducing the effects of oxidative stress.
