Biological control in ornamental plants: from basic to applied knowledge

Abstract: Biological control is a worldwide trend and has been prominent as an effective and compatible strategy for use in Integrated Pest Management programs. In Brazil, the control of these organisms using biological agents has been used in several agricultural systems, including floriculture. This paper approaches biological control from the perspective of the interaction between organisms in nature, applied as a pest management strategy. Knowledge about the dependence and reciprocity among populations in a natural … Show more

“…Adoption of biological control is one of the crucial approaches currently at the forefront and is strongly desired for sustainable agriculture 18 . Several features of using biocontrol agents have been reported as one eco-friendly alternative or a supplemental way of reducing the use of toxic fungicides in ornamental plants 65 . Therefore, it is important to come up with new biological control products for eco-friendly and sustainable efficient benefits 17 .…”

“…Establishing a sustainable agri-food system is one of the requirements to enable the development of horticultural agriculture that is ecologically correct, socially just, technologically adequate, economically viable, and culturally accepted. Among the agricultural practices that contribute to the sustainability of horticultural systems are the application of bioinputs to control pests and diseases [1], biotechnologies that improve plant growth and development [2], in greenhouses [3], and soilless cultivation using substrates [4].…”

“…In recent years, rose producers have adopted more sustainable control measures for the management of pest arthropods, including the use of entomophagous and entomopathogenic agents (Souza and Marucci, 2021). The predator Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) occurs naturally in cultivated areas, which makes its application as a control agent viable (Rodrigues-Silva et al, 2017;Martins et al, 2019;Lara et al, 2020).…”
