Biological Characteristics of Two Natural Enemies of Thrips, Orius strigicollis (Poppius) and O. laevigatus (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae)

Abstract: With the comparison of native Orius strigicollis (Poppius) to European O. laevigatus (Fieber), we investigated biological characteristics such as developmental period, fecundity, life span, predation ability, and augmentation after release. Experiments were carried out at five temperature condition, 15℃, 20℃, 25℃, 30℃, and 35℃. In the case of O. strigicollis, egg period was 3.1~14.9 days (hatchability: 46.7~88.2%), and developmental period of nymphs was 9.4~42.8 days (survival rate: 2.4~96.5%). Fecundity at ea… Show more

“…Anthocorid bugs are generalist predators, globally used as effi cient biocontrol agents (DELIGEORGIDIS 2002, KIM et al 2008, and hold considerable promise for ecological agriculture in India as well (ANANTHAKRISHNAN & SURESH-KUMAR 1985, NASSER & ABDURAHIMAN 2004, BALLAL & GUPTA 2011. However, until now there has been no comprehensive review of minute pirate bugs known from India.…”

“…Many species of Orius have been studied for use as a biological pesticide in agro-ecosystems (e.g. Glenister 1998;Sigsgaard and Ersboll 1999;Lattin 2000;Silveira et al 2004;Kim et al 2008;Wang et al 2014).…”

“…Most species of Anthocoridae are predaceous as nymphs and adults (Anderson 1962; Lattin and Stanton 1992). Some species such as Orius albidipennis (Reuter) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae), O. laevigatus, O. strigicollis , and O. insidiosus are used as biological control agents and are commercially produced and traded (Yasunaga 1997; Kim et al 2008). …”
