Biofuel Cells for Self‐Powered Electrochemical Biosensing and Logic Biosensing: A Review

Abstract: This article reviews recent advances and progress in developing electrochemical (EC) biosensing and logic biosensing systems based on self-powered biofuel cells (BFCs). BFCs that exploit enzymes and microbes have attracted a considerable recent interest owing to their unique ability to provide sustainable energy from renewable fuel source under mild conditions. This review focuses on recently introduced novel concepts for using BFCs as the basic element for EC-biosensing and especially EC-logic biosensing appl… Show more

“…However, one could exploit simple biomolecules and microbes toward developing energy generating systems. Indeed, such routes have been explored for decades wherein researchers have utilized microbes and enzymes for developing microbial 22,23 and enzymatic [24][25][26] biofuel cells respectively. The anode and cathode of such systems are constructed out of biological entities that help consume a chemical, via natural processes, to generate electricity.…”

“…54 The main advantage of self -powered biosensing devices is that they can operate without any power input to the cells, producing power and thus making it attractive f or the potential use in implantable devices 109 and in inex pensive screening devices based on printed electronics. 43 Self -powered biosensors, however, produce relatively low power densities and have low open circuit potentials that prevent them f rom real lif e applications where the generated power should be suf f icient f or measurements and an analytical signal transmission.…”

“…It is also a fuel for fuel cell applications. To develop electrocatalysts that are easily prepared and highly reliable for glucose biofuel cells 1,2 and glucose sensors is very attractive. Directly electrochemical oxidation of glucose at regular conductive surfaces is usually kinetically hindered.…”
