Biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella spp. under mono and dual-species conditions and their sensitivity to cetrimonium bromide, peracetic acid and sodium hypochlorite

Abstract: The aim of this study was evaluated the biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus 4E and Salmonella spp. under mono and dual-species biofilms, onto stainless steel 316 (SS) and polypropylene B (PP), and their sensitivity to cetrimonium bromide, peracetic acid and sodium hypochlorite. The biofilms were developed by immersion of the surfaces in TSB by 10 d at 37 °C. The results showed that in monospecies biofilms the type of surface not affected the cellular density (p > 0.05). However, in dual-species biofilms… Show more

“…Our results are in accordance with those reported by Hans et al [4] who noticed that Salmonella adhered more easily to hydrophobic materials such as PVC than to stainless steel which is more hydrophilic. Mericarmen et al [32] reported higher biofilm production by Salmonella on plastic than on stainless steel. Once a biofilm is formed, this could be a source of contamination for foods that is why protocols in food processing units should consider more Salmonella's biofilm removal.…”

“…Several studies have shown the antibiofilm effect of HOCl on Gram-negative bacteria [ 149 , 150 , 151 ]. However, bacteria exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of this disinfectant have recovered from the damage caused by HOCl, being able to form robust biofilms [ 147 , 152 , 153 ].…”

“…The EPS provides protection to the microbial population of biofilms by concentrating nutrients, sequestering toxins, and preventing desiccation and biocides action [6]. The previous studies have confirmed the ability of different microbial species to form biofilms and persist in the environment, such as Salmonella , Staphylococcus [7,8], Listeria monocytogenes (L.m) [9], Listeria innocua (L.i) [10], Escherichia coli [11], and Campylobacter jejuni [12]. The ability of bacteria to form biofilms and their quantification was studied by applying different techniques including the use of polystyrene microplates [13] and crystal violet (CV) staining [14].…”
