Many natural resources around the world are managed by indigenous communities that are closely connected to nature and have nature-based livelihoods. These communities are particularly vulnerable to climate change and in need of adaptation strategies. Therefore, understanding how a community that is connected to nature perceives climate change is crucial. Some studies have shown that the capacity to respond to climate change vulnerability might be influenced by the social ties among community members. We used Q methodology to explore and compare climate change perceptions in two indigenous communities in Colombia and Mexico. Both of these communities are characterized by nature-based livelihoods, collective ownership of land, and community-based natural resource management. We analyzed their perception of climate change and nature, their preferred options for adaptation strategies, and the sources of information they trust. The perceptions that emerged were interpreted according to the four worldviews proposed by cultural theory. Overall, this research suggests that perceptions varied across and within local contexts, meaning that different ways of understanding and dealing with climate change coexist within the communities. The results showed that hierarchy and egalitarian worldviews (as described by cultural theory) are more common in both indigenous communities. The history and lived experiences of community-based management for both communities influence preferred adaptation options to cope with climate change.

En Colombia el aprovechamiento insostenible de la biodiversidad se debe al desconocimiento que existe sobre su potencial estratégico. El estudio etnobotánico que se presenta, desarrollado en la cuenca alta de la Quebrada Honda, tuvo como objetivo caracterizar el manejo de la flora local por parte de la comunidad y proponer alternativas de producción más sostenibles mediante sistemas agroforestales. Para ello, se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas y caminatas etnobotánicas, estas últimas con conocedores locales. Se encontraron 98 especies útiles, correspondientes a 47 familias y 86 géneros. La familia Asteraceae presentó el mayor número de especies con 14. Los géneros con mayor diversidad fueron Passiflora y Rubus. Del total de las especies identificadas, 51 tienen un uso agropecuario, 29 un uso medicinal y 28 utilizadas en servicios ambientales. Los resultados permitieron un acercamiento al conocimiento etnobotánico en zonas de amortiguación del páramo de Sumapaz, así como reconocer el conocimiento rural asociado a la biodiversidad y el agroecosistema local. Se reafirma la necesidad de incrementar el conocimiento de la comunidad sobre el potencial estratégico de las especies locales mediante la implementación de sistemas agroforestales que combinen las especies nativas con cultivos y producción pecuaria, en los que se equilibren la conservación y la producción.

Colombia is the country with the largest number of bird species worldwide, yet its avifauna is seriously threatened by habitat degradation and poaching. We built a DNA barcode library of nearly half of the bird species listed in the CITES appendices for Colombia, thereby constructing a species identification reference that will help in global efforts for controlling illegal species trade. We obtained the COI barcode sequence of 151 species based on 281 samples, representing 46% of CITES bird species registered for Colombia. The species analysed belong to nine families, where Trochilidae and Psittacidae are the most abundant ones. We sequenced for the first time the DNA barcode of 47 species, mainly hummingbirds endemic of the Northern Andes region. We found a correct match between morphological and genetic identification for 86-92% of the species analysed, depending on the cluster analysis performed (BIN, ABGD and TaxonDNA). Additionally, we identified eleven cases of high intraspecific divergence based on K2P genetic distances (up to 14.61%) that could reflect cryptic diversity. In these cases, the specimens were collected in geographically distant sites such as different mountain systems, opposite flanks of the mountain or different elevations. Likewise, we found two cases of possible hybridization and incomplete lineage sorting. This survey constitutes the first attempt to build the DNA barcode library of endangered bird species in Colombia establishing as a reference for management programs of illegal species trade, and providing major insights of phylogeographic structure that can guide future taxonomic research.
