Bilateral orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst: A rare case report and review

Abstract: Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) is a developmental cyst of jaw and was initially considered by the World Health Organization (1992) as the uncommon orthokeratinized variant of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). However, studies have shown that OOC has peculiar clinicopathologic aspects when compared with other developmental odontogenic cysts, especially OKC. So orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst now stands out to be a distinct entity. Clinically, it occurs as a single cyst, shows a predilection for males and… Show more

“…At the present time however, there is no convincing evidence to link multiple OOCs to NBCCS or Gardner Syndrome. Table 1 summarises four previous reports of bilateral or multiple OOCs reported in the literature [14,[16][17][18]. Similar to the cases reported here, the patients were of a relatively young age, with three of the four reports involving an individual in their third decade.…”

“…[ 1 ] Although previously thought to be a variant of OKC, OOC is now recognized as a separate entity. [ 2 ] OOC usually occurs in 3 rd to 4 th decade and shows male predominance. It presents as solitary, unilocular radiolucency in the posterior mandible with cortical expansion.…”

“…[8][9][10][11][12][13]15,25 Some authors argue that the OKC is an intraosseous counterpart of epidermoid cysts located in the jaw. 27,28 Some developmental odontogenic cysts, including botryoid odontogenic cysts, OKC and GOC have aggressive growth potential and high recurrence rates. The recurrence rates of these cyts have been reported approximately 30% in various studies (range 5%-62%).…”
